I never had a sweet tooth. And lately I feel like I have nothing but a sweet tooth!!!
I've done nothing but indulge in sweet things since I've been in NYC. Maybe it's the bakeries on every block, the smell of coffee and sugar every morning or the fact Pure Barre is right beside Whole Foods and lululemon is right next door to Dean and Dulce. Pinkberry and Insomnia cookies are within a five minute walk and let's face it... I am obsessed with food and eating it makes me happy.
I think of myself as a savory person and when I realized that I was eating something sweet every night after my savory dinners... I realized that I'm over eating compensating for change, moments of depression, anxiety, stress, boredom or eating it just because.
It's not that I'm laying around all day bored, but it's because I run around all day east side to west side, that when I finally get home to sit in front of my computer... I just want a cookie or croissant. I think I've been justifying them saying I deserve it because I work hard... but in truth, I just can't control what I'm eating. And as a control freak, I'm taking charge! No more almond croissants (if you've never had one, don't try them. They are the most delicious beautiful thing I've ever eaten) ...SOBS :( ... and NO more cookies, bites of chocolate and when someone offers me something I'll just say no.
I'm taking action and I've enrolled my close friends at work Amanda and Emily, a new friend from PB Robyn, Lori and anyone else who wants to jump on board. My personal goal is some abs. I think I have them, they're just covered up by a layer of... you know what!
My friend Amanda was talking about her body at work and I was thinking as she was talking that it wasn't that we weren't working out, it was our eating habits! She has an incredible body and works out all the time! I work out five days a week, but we both felt fat all the time. It is true... 80% of our bodies is what we eat. I need to stop preaching it and live it.
Immediately, I volunteered a diet plan where we would hold each other accountable and keep each other on track. We will email, text, facebook and tweet recipe ideas, grocery lists and remind ourselves of the NO list (which does in fact include Nutella).
For me, no granola, definitely no more almond croissants, no sweets period, gluten free and MORE RAW. I cook one big meal on Sunday's and eat on it for the week, so today I made some asian quinoa. Lori had made this recipe a while back and I made it so I could take for lunch this week.
These are guestaments on measurements. I never measure and use whatever feels right. :) Also note you can add any vegetable you know or take away what I used. You could add meat or tofu and use this as a side dish with fish or chicken. Enjoy responsibly. Portion control is key.
8-12oz organic quinoa
3 red bell peppers diced (2 if bigger)
1 small fresh ginger root minced
4 cloves of garlic minced
1 jalapeno diced small
6-10 white mushrooms diced
Package of bean sprouts
Green vegetable of choice (I used fresh french green beans) cut small. Broccoli, peas, sugar snap peas, edamame, etc.
6 tablespoons Sesame Oil
1/8 cup of Rice wine vinegar
1/2 cup Soy sauce (gluten free)
4-6 cups water
In a large pot, toast the qiunoa in sesame oil for about a minute. Add water. Cover and bring to boil on medium heat. Add ginger and garlic. Then simmer w/ lid on medium low.
After about 10 minutes, add the vegetables. Add some rice wine vinegar and soy sauce. Let simmer until quinoa is soft and done.
I've enrolled more people now that I've written this and I look forward to posting a blog in a couple months how I feel beach ready. lol. I told my friends... let's look great, feel great and be great!
